'Manila Amendments' to the STCW Convention: A Quick Guide for Seafarers

The competence of seafarers is the most critical factor in the safe and efficient operation of ships, and has a direct impact on the safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment. New wide-ranging amendments to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) rules, agreed by governments in Manila in 2010, are intended to ensure that STCW standards stay relevant, so that seafarers can continue to develop and maintain their professional skills. This short brochure summarises what seafarers can expect from the updated STCW Convention, which entered into force on 1 January 2012.

Shipping Industry Guidance on Pilot Transfer Arrangements

This brochure, published by the International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) and ICS/ISF, aims to remind shipping companies and seafarers of the vital need to ensure that ladders used for pilot transfers are always rigged correctly. The brochure is also supported by the International Group of P&I Clubs, BIMCO, CLIA, Intercargo, IPTA, Intertanko, OCIMF, SIGTTO, ITF, IFSMA and the Nautical Institute.

Shipping, World Trade and the Reduction of CO2 Emissions

The international shipping industry is firmly committed to playing its part in reducing emissions of CO2 and other Green House Gases. This brochure, produced by ICS to coincide with the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference in Lima (COP 20), explains the issues involved and the progress being made by the industry and its global regulator - the IMO - to reduce ships’ CO2 emissions.

Shipping Industry Guidance on the Use of Oily Water Separators

The international shipping industry (represented by BIMCO, Intercargo, ICS, ISF, Intertanko and OCIMF produced this basic guidance for management and crews, concerning the use of oily water separators, which emphasises the vital importance of strict adherence to International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements.

Shipping Industry Guidance on Environmental Compliance

This guidance has been prepared by ICS and ISF as a template for the review of company compliance programmes adopted in accordance with existing regulatory requirements, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) International Safety Management (ISM) Code. This framework is also supported by BIMCO, Intercargo, Intertanko, OCIMF and SIGTTO.

Safe Transport of Containers by Sea

ICS and the World Shipping Council (WSC) published this industry guidance for shippers and container stuffers concerning the safe transport of containers by sea. Significantly, the guidance is supported by the Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF). The Guidance is extracted from ‘Safe Transport of Containers by Sea – Guidelines on Best Practices’ – which was published by ICS and WSC in 2009.

Industry Recommendations for ECDIS Training

Being aware that the implementation of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) has given rise to confusion in regard to ECDIS training, an industry group, organised and coordinated by The Nautical Institute and comprising leading international shipping industry organisations, held a series of meetings in order to produce this guidance on issues of training and competency for ECDIS.

Sustainable Development: IMO World Maritime Day 2013

Produced to coincide with IMO World Maritime Day, this brochure sets out how shipping contributes to the United Nations sustainable development agenda and argues that the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, social and economic – should be given equal priority. ICS suggests that all future environmental regulation adopted by IMO should meet existing IMO criteria for demonstrating ‘compelling need’ and be subject to a full and proper cost benefit analysis and impact assessment, including the availability of any required new technology.

Focus on English Language

The use of English language is increasingly becoming a mandatory requirement for many categories of seafarer. In addition to the emphasis on English language training in the STCW Convention there are various other IMO requirements which stipulate the need for seafarers to communicate in a common language. This leaflet explains developments concerning the use of English by seafarers internationally and provides information on the ISF Marlins English Language Test and the complementary Test of Spoken English (TOSE).

ICS/ISF Publications Catalogue 2013

In addition to representing the interests of ship operators at bodies such as the International Maritime Organization and the International Labour Organization, the production and revision of maritime publications is one of the most important tasks that ICS undertakes for the shipping industry. These activities are co-ordinated under the banner of Marisec Publications. Many of the industry guides produced by ICS are an essential complement to government regulations, and are required reading by companies and seafarers involved in maritime operations.
