Mr Shahen Poghosyan brings more than 20 years of experience in nuclear safety, with focus on safety assessment and risk‑informed decision‑making. He is with the IAEA since 2016 and serves as a technical lead in the area of Safety Assessment.

In his current role, Mr Poghosyan leads the development of IAEA Safety Standards related to safety assessment, with a particular focus on innovative reactor technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), non‑water‑cooled reactor designs, and transportable nuclear power plants (NPPs). He leads the Agency’s work on design safety and safety assessment for transportable NPPs and oversees the preparation of supporting technical publications that will support future updates of relevant IAEA Safety Standards.

In addition, Mr Poghosyan coordinates IAEA activities addressing the interfaces between nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, with special attention to emerging NPP and SMR designs.
