The world will need the availability of low-carbon fuels from new places, in strategic locations, on a commercial scale. There is a need to substantially increase the production and availability of low-carbon fuels close to the ports, to transport those new low-carbon fuels worldwide just as we transport fossil fuels today. The maritime sector is expected to transport at least 50% of these fuels worldwide (IRENA). Shipping’s future low-carbon fuel demand alone, is the equivalent of the current world’s renewable production (ICS), as shipping will be a user of these low-carbon fuels.

The first session will be a panel discussion that will focus on the role of the maritime-energy value chain to support the deployment and transportation of low-carbon fuels globally through maritime and the policies for ports decarbonisation. The first part of the session will focus on discussing the role of shipping to support the wider energy transition, particularly as a key enabler in the transportation of low-carbon fuels and a user of these fuels. It will host the public-private discussion on the Clean Energy Marine Hubs as a CEM collaboration public-private platform across the whole value chain (energy providers, ports, shipping) to share knowledge and data to support the de-risking of investments and accelerate the transportation of low-carbon fuels through the maritime sector.

The second session will be a panel discussion on the role of ports in the transition to zero-emission shipping, particularly discussing policy drivers and investments for accelerating action. Pacific Environment (PE) will introduce its Ports for People campaign and moderate a discussion with our panellists. Together with local communities, allies and partners, Ports for People seeks to transform ports from hotspots of fossil fuel pollution to thriving hubs of sustainable economic development and environmental protection. In a collaborative discussion with Port of San Diego Commissioner Sandy Naranjo and ABS Vice President David Walker, the session will elaborate on the critical role of policy and financing infrastructure development in the transition.
