Aminu Umar is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sea Transport Services Nigeria Limited, a Nigerian-incorporated company that is arguably the biggest transporter of clean petroleum products in West Africa. Sea Transport is the only maritime operator with Nigerianflagged vessels that operate with certified Oil Companies International Marine Forum Shipping Inspection Report. Sea Transport accounts for 25% of petroleum movement in Nigeria coming behind state-owned NNPC which accounts for 33% of the market share.
Aminu has led Sea Transport through various growth phases having grown from a brokerage firm in 2000 to a vessel chatterer in 2004 before acquiring its first vessel in 2008. Today, the company operates with a fleet of Eleven vessels that provide quality, cost-efficient and globally competitive vessel chartering services to cargo owners, traders and financiers across West Africa. Sea Transport under Aminu’s stewardship prides itself on its character of unbeatable professionalism in providing service to its esteemed clientele thereby helping them to achieve their corporate objectives.
Aminu has supported maritime transportation in Nigeria by using his extensive experience to come up with ground-breaking solutions that have resolved complex problems within the Oil & Gas Industry. He has particularly supported The Federal Government of Nigeria and some State Governments to develop fantastic policies which has earned him a strong industry pedigree and good patronage from top players especially IOCs like Total, Agip, Addax etc. Aminu has formidable business ties with local and international trading companies like Vitol, Glencore, Trafigura, Sahara Group, AYM Shafa, NIPCO and NEPAL just to mention a few.
Alhaji Aminu continues to play a significant role in shaping The Nigerian Maritime Industry as evidenced by the various roles/capacities he has served and still serving. He is the current president of the Nigeria Chamber of Shipping and the immediate past president of the Nigeria
Ship-Owner’s Association. He is also a member of The Ministerial Committee on Nigerian Fleet Implementation and a past member of the Advisory Council to the Board of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). He is also on several international committees:
• Advisory Council (Middle East and Africa) for Lloyds Register (LR).
• Chairman Integrity Alliance of Maritime Anti-Corruption Network.
• Member, International Tanker Owners Association.
• Member, International Ship Owners Association.
Aminu has an interest in several companies including Integrated Shipping Company Nigeria Limited which has grown to become one of the leading shipping agents in Nigeria that specializes in all types of vessels. Sea Transport and Integrated Shipping are significant
employers of labour withover 500 African employees in addition to several expatriates.
Aminu holds a BSc. in Accounting from the University of Maiduguri. He is an MBA (Shipping and Logistics) student at Copenhagen Business School Denmark.
