After graduating from Glasgow University, John qualified as a Chartered Accountant. In May 1981, he joined J. & J. Denholm Limited, the holding company for the Denholm family group of companies, as accountant for its ship management business. He subsequently progressed to Group Finance Director before being appointed Chief Executive in 1993.
As Chief Executive, John led the transformation of the Group, rebuilding its shipping business while diversifying operations into Logistics, Seafoods, Industrial and Oilfield Services. In 2015, the Oilfield Services division was demerged to form what is now Denholm Energy Services.
John was appointed Chairman of J. & J. Denholm in 1998 and became Executive Chairman of Denholm Energy Services following the demerger. Although he stepped down as Chief Executive of J. & J. Denholm in 2020, he continues to serve as their Executive Chairman.
Throughout his career, John has held several prominent leadership roles within the shipping industry. He served as Non-Executive Director of Braemar from 2002 to 2014, President of BIMCO from 2013 to 2015, Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights in 2019-20 and President of the UK Chamber of Shipping from 2020 to 2022. In recognition of his services to shipping and charity, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2022.
Today, alongside his roles as Executive Chairman of J. & J. Denholm Limited and Denholm Energy Services, John is Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping. He also serves on the governing bodies of the UK Chamber of Shipping and the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, and is a Trustee of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets. His other appointments include Chairman of Denholm Oilfield Services, Director of Hadley Shipping and Director of Anglo Eastern Univan Group. He was previously President of Glasgow Shipowners’ Benevolent Association and Deacon of the Incorporation of Hammermen.
