Ms. Gorgula has 19 years’ experience in regulatory roles related to marine biosecurity. She is currently the Director of the Ballast Water Unit in the Australian Government Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry and previously the Ballast Water and Hull Fouling Coordinator for the State of Hawaii, and senior officer in the South Australian aquatic invasive species program. In her current capacity, Ms. Gorgula leads a team responsible for the design, monitoring, evaluation, review and implementation of legislative, policy and inspection frameworks that establish the foundations for Australia’s marine biosecurity system, as it relates to the effective and efficient regulation of biosecurity risks associated with ballast water. This includes ensuring Australia meets its obligations as a signatory to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM Convention). Ms. Gorgula also currently coordinates the Correspondence Group on Review of the IMO BWM Convention, since the 81st session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee.
