Stefano Gaggero is Associate Professor at the Department of Electric, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and Naval Architecture (DITEN) of the University of Genoa. He started his research activity at the same University, first as PhD. student and then as Research Fellow in the field of ship propulsion, propeller design and cavitation, developing BEM codes for unsteady, cavitating, propeller performance predictions. Those methods formed the basis for optimization-based design approaches for conventional and non-conventional propulsors, which results were successfully exploited in many EU funded project devoted to noise mitigation. His recent activities encompass Energy Saving Devices, for the design of which he extended the frameworks already developed for propellers using viscous based computational methods. Simultaneously, in the context of propellers design, he is working on radiated noise prediction tools (from simplified physical models to acoustic analogies and Machine Learning based approaches) to be included in a thorough design and optimization procedure which make use of surrogate models and multi-fidelity data levels to improve the accuracy of the predictions and speed up the design process. In parallel he is also involved in ship hull optimization employing data reduction, proper orthogonal decomposition methods and surrogate modelling applied to free form deformations and high-fidelity RANS analyses. Stefano is a regular speaker at ship propulsion conferences, and is a dedicated reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals. Stefano has been involved in many research projects, funded by the European Union, several national agencies and many industrial companies. He is author of more than 150 scientific papers, 60 of which have been published in international journals.
