ICS and European Shipowners | ECSA welcome the Hong Kong Convention entering into force globally

26 June 2025, London: The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and European Shipowners | ECSA welcome the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) entering into force globally today.   The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the Hong Kong Convention on the 15th May 2009. The aim of the Convention is to reduce risks to health, safety and the environment, ensuring that ships when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives, do not pose any unnecessary risk to human health and safety or the environment.

New report highlights biggest risks facing shipping industry, ahead of ministerial summit in Athens

11 June 2025, Athens – The ICS Maritime Barometer Report 2024-2025, launched today by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), reveals a steady decline in confidence among global maritime leaders to manage the risks posed by increasing political instability, alongside a growing array of interconnected threats. The release of the report sets the context for discussions at the Shaping the Future of Shipping Summit in Athens hosted by ICS, the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, and the Union of Greek Shipowners. Senior industry leaders and key policymakers will convene at a critical juncture, with global trade instability at record highs.

Athens to host high level ‘Shaping the Future of Shipping’ Summit in June

7 May 2025, London – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of the Hellenic Republic, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) are pleased to announce their commitment to co-host a high-level summit in Athens, Greece. At a time of significant volatility in the sector the Summit will bring together policymakers and industry leaders to address the critical issues impacting global trade and the maritime value chain. The Summit also provides a timely platform for industry leaders to discuss how to convert the GHG reduction agreement at the International Maritime Organization into reality and catalyse the supply of new fuels.

Enclosed Space Fatalities – A united industry response

The fourth Enclosed Space Entry – Joint Industry Workshop took place at OCIMF’s London office on 27 March 2025. The cross-industry working group drawn from leading maritime organisations gathered to identify measures to reduce or eliminate deaths in enclosed spaces onboard vessels.
