Bridge Procedures Guide, Fifth Edition
This fifth edition was withdrawn in September 2021 and replaced by the sixth edition. The Bridge Procedures Guide is widely acknowledged as the principal industry guidance on safe bridge procedures, and is used by Masters, watchkeeping officers, companies and training institutions worldwide. The Guide is referenced in the footnotes of several International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conventions.

Rescue at Sea: A Guide to Principles and Practice as Applied to Refugees and Migrants
This version was withdrawn and replaced in May 2026. Leaflet prepared jointly by ICS, IMO and UNHCR providing guidance on relevant legal provisions, and on practical procedures to ensure the prompt disembarkation of survivors of rescue operations, and measures to meet their specific needs, particularly in the case of refugees and asylum-seekers.

This edition was withdrawn in July 2025 and replaced by the second edition This industry Guide provides recommendations on safety, minimum equipment levels and good operating practices. If more stringent international, national or local regulations apply then they should take precedence. This Guide is a required publication on the SIRE Vessel Inspection Questionnaires for Oil Tankers, Combination Carriers, Shuttle Tankers, Chemical Tankers and Gas Tankers.
Safe Transport of Containers by Sea
ICS and the World Shipping Council (WSC) published this industry guidance for shippers and container stuffers concerning the safe transport of containers by sea. Significantly, the guidance is supported by the Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF). The Guidance is extracted from ‘Safe Transport of Containers by Sea – Guidelines on Best Practices’ – which was published by ICS and WSC in 2009.
Shipping Industry Guidance on Pilot Transfer Arrangements, Second Edition
This version was withdrawn in January 2022 and replaced by version three. This brochure, published by the International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) and ICS/ISF, aims to remind shipping companies and seafarers of the vital need to ensure that ladders used for pilot transfers are always rigged correctly. The brochure is also supported by the International Group of P&I Clubs, BIMCO, CLIA, Intercargo, IPTA, Intertanko, OCIMF, SIGTTO, ITF, IFSMA and the Nautical Institute.
The ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006: Guidance for Ship Operators on Port State Control as from 20 August 2013
ICS led shipowner representation in the negotiations for the text of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). This brochure explains the measures which port state control officers are entitled to take following the entry into force of the MLC on 20 August 2013, and offers advice to shipowners to help them pre-empt port state control problems.
Promoting Maritime Treaty Ratification
For many years ICS and ISF have been conducting a global campaign to stress the vital necessity for governments to ratify and implement maritime Conventions adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and other United Nations bodies that impact on shipping. The Comité Maritime International (CMI) has now joined forces with ICS and ISF to assist those countries where there has been limited ratification of the major Conventions.
