REPORTING TO: Senior Manager (Legal)

WORKING WITH: Senior Manager (Legal), Policy Manager (Legal), Principal Director (Legal)

JOB SUMMARY:

To support the Legal Department in its work with: UN agencies and other international, regional and national organisations and institutions; the ICS Maritime Law Committee and Insurance Committee; other ICS departments, committees and member associations.

To conduct high quality and timely research and analysis to support the provision of advice on legal and insurance policy issues that may affect the interests of ICS members; and legal advice internally to ICS and Marisec and the Company Secretary.

To support the efficient and effective operation of the Maritime Law and Insurance Committees.

To support delivery of legal training, internally with Marisec staff and externally with students visiting from, for example, WMU, IMLI and other academic institutions.

JOB CONTENT:

  • Assisting and supporting preparations for ICS participation in meetings of international, regional and national governmental and non-governmental organisations, including IMO and the IOPC Funds; the EU institutions and other regional and national administrations; and international, national and academic organisations, including CMI, IUMI, ISU, the LSLC and others.
  • Assisting and supporting the timely delivery of reports of significant developments to the ICS membership;
  • Together with other Legal team members, supporting the efficient and effective operation of two specialist committees under the purview of the Legal department and that report to the Board – the Maritime Law Committee and the Insurance Committee – and, as required, other ICS committees, sub-committees and panels;
  • Undertaking high quality research and analysis of complex legal and insurance issues that may affect the interests of ICS members / international shipowners and operators and the timely production of relevant concise reports;
  • Reviewing and updating legal and insurance content on the ICS website;
  • Supporting the preparation of ICS meeting papers and reports, and follow up actions;
  • Supporting the review/production process of agreed ICS publications.
  • Assisting with administrative matters including, review and maintenance of the Legal Department filing system, preparations for meetings;
  • Supporting the provision of company secretarial services for ICS and Marisec.

EDUCATION AND SKILLS:

  • As a minimum, the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in Law, or a bachelor’s degree in another subject together with a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and preferably a professional law qualification.
  • Excellent written English and communication skills, with attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Knowledge of and interest in international maritime law.
  • Logical, analytical thinking and ability to conduct detailed legal analysis and produce briefings, reports and presentations;
  • Ability to explain complex issues and arguments, concisely and comprehensibly.
  • Able to demonstrate general knowledge of and interest in politics and international affairs.
  • Ability to be diplomatic when explaining positions with which others may not agree.
  • Willingness to travel abroad.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Outlook and PowerPoint; ability to use / willingness to learn Microsoft 365 tools and WordPress.
