Brazil is one of the largest hubs for the trafficking of illegal narcotics by sea globally, specifically cocaine. It is recommended that all ships visiting Brazilian ports should be particularly vigilant.
The port of Santos is one of the most frequent loading points for illegal drugs onto cargo ships. The port of Rio de Janeiro is also often targeted by traffickers, principally cruise ships. Drugs have also been seized in Itapoa and Itajai, a reflection of recent emerging trends which see traffickers targeting smaller ports around Brazil to avoid increasingly tight controls at the Port of Santos.
As such, ICS has reached out to a range of P&I Club correspondents across Brazil to get localised guidance which covers as many areas as possible.
