New study on gaps between EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention published, stresses need for one international standard

European Shipowners | ECSA and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) are releasing today an independent study on the key areas of divergence between the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Hong Kong Convention (HKC). The study also examines the significant change that the new global standards have brought after the HKC entered into force.

Assessing global standards for ship recycling: Gap analysis of the Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation

The objective of this report is to identify and analyse key areas where the HKC and the EU SSR diverge. To do this, the report examines the legal texts of both frameworks, together with the corresponding IMO and EU guidelines and secondary legislation. Several recommendations to narrow the gaps between the frameworks are also given. The national implementations of the EU SRR and HKC as well as guidelines from other bodies such as the ILO are out of scope of this report.

Batteries can reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance performance – particularly on short sea routes, which our panel came together to provide insight on.
