LINE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR: ICS Policy Officer
ROLE SUMMARY:
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for the maritime transport sector, which moves 90% of world trade. ICS works closely with its member national shipowners’ associations in over 40 countries, whose member shipping companies operate more than 80% of world merchant tonnage. Established in 1921, ICS is concerned with all regulatory issues that affect this major global industry. To represent the interests of shipowners with their intergovernmental regulatory bodies, the ICS Secretariat administers specialist committees which determine ICS policy positions. The Shipping Policy Committee (SPC) is concerned with the smooth operation of shipping’s global regulatory framework and the promotion of free trade principles, liaising inter alia with United Nations agencies and bodies such as WTO and OECD.
The Head of Shipping Policy will support the work of the ICS Shipping Policy Committee and wider ICS policy team on matters of trade, market access and shipping policy. An advocate for the shipping industry, ICS is looking for a generalist with a passion for international affairs, excellent communication and presentation skills and an aptitude for grasping complex new topics quickly. This role includes line management responsibility for the ICS Policy Officer.

JOB CONTENT:
- Quickly develop subject matter expertise on advocacy subjects, relative to industry.
- Act as Secretary to the ICS Shipping Policy Committee
- Liaise with ICS Member National Shipowner Associations to facilitate consensus on global shipping policy positions.
- Represent ICS and advocate industry positions in external meetings (including the UN International Maritime Organization).
- Lead and manage research and advocacy projects across policy priority areas in maritime trade and shipping.
- Line manage and ensure professional development opportunity for ICS Policy Officer.
- Support ICS research projects of relevance to the shipping policy committee and collaborate with ICS departments to ensure advocacy efforts are coordinated and effective.
- Assistance with Minutes of Board meetings.
- Maintain comprehensive picture of upcoming trends and opportunities to support industry trade interests.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail, organised and able to prioritise and manage own workload.
- Excellent presentation skills, willingness to represent ICS in intergovernmental public meetings.
- Quick learner, able to grasp a wide range of political, commercial and technical issues quickly, with a sound generalist approach.
- Knowledge, and interest in, global trade issues and wider international affairs.
- Comfortable with basic qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
- Prior experience of professional policy advocacy/consulting role or other relevant professional experience.
- Willingness to travel abroad.
DESIRABLE SKILLS:
- Prior experience of the maritime or trade policy sectors desirable but at all not essential.
- Previous line management experience desirable but not essential.
IT SKILLS:
- MS Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of SharePoint 365 and associated applications is also desirable.
