Charting the Course: Global Shipping Industry Unites with Next-Gen Educators in Tokyo
The future of global trade is shifting rapidly under the weight of digital transformation, decarbonisation targets, and evolving safety standards. Keeping pace with these changes requires a fundamental rethink of how tomorrow’s seafarers are educated. To address this exact challenge, the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) recently hosted its inaugural Early Career Academic Forum (ECAF) in Tokyo, Japan.
ICS Driving Practical Ballast Water Outcomes for Global Shipping
The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) review of the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention is currently one of the most significant regulatory works taking place. Expected to conclude by Autumn 2028, the BWM Convention review will result in amendments to both mandatory instruments (the BWM Convention and BWMS Code) and non-mandatory instruments (Guidelines and Guidance associated with the BWM Convention). Once these amendments enter into force (currently anticipated to be Autumn 2028), the current Experience-Building Phase (EBP) will end, and a stricter compliance and enforcement regime will begin.
Efficient and Quiet Technologies for Ships Webinar – 3 July 2026
On Friday the 3 July 2026, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) hosted a webinar on ‘Efficient and Quiet Technologies for Ships.’ These technologies are becoming increasingly important as the industry seeks to improve performance and reduce environmental impact. ICS’ Principal Marine Director, John Stawpert, moderated this discussion, with Associate Professor at the University of Genoa Stefano Gaggero, Director Hydrodynamics at Kongsberg Hydrodynamic Research Centre Göran Grunditz, Naval Architect at Fincantieri Alessandro Marino, Senior CFD Specialist at Lloyd’s Register Savas Sezen, and Technical Director at ICS Chris Waddington, making up the speakers on the panel.
