ICS has consultative status with several intergovernmental bodies (IGOs). Ties are particularly close with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which stretch back to this body’s inception in 1959.
ICS also works with other United Nation’s bodies including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a 1951 multilateral treaty deposited with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that aims to secure coordinated, effective action to prevent and to control the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products. ICS contributes to the Container Cleanliness Industry Advisory Group (CCIAG), which has been established by the IPPC secretariat.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was adopted in 1982. It lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world's oceans and seas establishing rules governing all uses of the oceans and their resources. It embodies in one instrument traditional rules for the uses of the oceans and at the same time introduces new legal concepts and regimes and addresses new concerns. The Convention also provides the framework for further development of specific areas of the law of the sea.
