Intergovernmental organisations

ICS has consultative status with several intergovernmental bodies (IGOs). Ties are particularly close with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which stretch back to this body’s inception in 1959.

ICS also works with other United Nation’s bodies including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a 1951 multilateral treaty deposited with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that aims to secure coordinated, effective action to prevent and to control the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products. ICS contributes to the Container Cleanliness Industry Advisory Group (CCIAG), which has been established by the IPPC secretariat.

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

UNCTAD support developing countries to access the benefits of a globalized economy more fairly and effectively. UNCTAD helps equip them to deal with the potential drawbacks of greater economic integration. To do this, they provide analysis, facilitate consensus-building, and offer technical assistance. This helps devloping countires to use trade, investment, finance, and technology as vehicles for inclusive and sustainable development.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

World Trade Organization (WTO)

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.

United Nations Conference on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL)

The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. UNCITRAL is a legal body with universal membership specializing in commercial law reform worldwide for over 50 years, UNCITRAL's business is the modernization and harmonization of rules on international business.

United Nations Division for Oceans Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS)

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was adopted in 1982. It lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world's oceans and seas establishing rules governing all uses of the oceans and their resources. It embodies in one instrument traditional rules for the uses of the oceans and at the same time introduces new legal concepts and regimes and addresses new concerns. The Convention also provides the framework for further development of specific areas of the law of the sea.
