ICS has consultative status with several intergovernmental bodies (IGOs). Ties are particularly close with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which stretch back to this body’s inception in 1959.
ICS also works with other United Nation’s bodies including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

IMO – the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN SDGs.
