In 1961 ICS was the first shipping industry association to be granted consultative status at the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO). Since then, our secretariat has been regularly attending – and contributing to – the technical meetings. Our national association membership structure enables us to provide a well-balanced industry view, which we express through submissions.
On behalf of the undersigned maritime transportation stakeholders—including importers, exporters, retailers, manufacturers, agriculture groups, logistics providers, and other users of the international freight transportation system—we strongly support the two-month extension of the suspension of the Section 301 vessel fees related to China’s targeting of the maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. We appreciate the extension to January 9, 2027 as a result of the summit between President Trump and President Xi. We call upon USTR and the administration to permanently suspend the fees to provide certainty to the global supply chain.
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has serious concerns regarding the growing use of unilateral and regional regulatory measures affecting global shipping that exceed the jurisdictional limits established under international law and/or depart from internationally agreed standards. ICS calls on States to reaffirm their commitment to the global regulatory frameworks and principles and to abide by their existing international obligations, in particular as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
